The role

At Bourn, we’re building the technology behind a new generation of lending, payments and financial products. We want to make sophisticated financial capabilities feel simple, intuitive and accessible - both for our customers and the teams running our business.

We’re looking for an AI Product Engineer who combines strong software development fundamentals with hands-on experience building agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations and conversational AI experiences. This is a product engineering role, not an AI research position.

What you'll be working on

Build AI experiences that make our products stand out: Design intelligent assistants, agents and conversational interfaces across customer-facing products. Help businesses understand funding, manage payments, navigate financial information and complete tasks without learning the underlying systems.

Make our internal teams dramatically more effective: Build AI-powered tools for operations, finance, credit, risk, commercial and engineering teams. Help colleagues access information, investigate problems, understand customers and execute workflows across systems.

Build the foundations for agentic financial products: Develop MCP servers and clients, tool integrations and agent workflows that safely expose financial data and capabilities. Connect LLMs to APIs and business processes with authentication, authorisation, observability and human oversight.

Own the experience, not just the model integration: Work across backend services, APIs, user interfaces and AI orchestration. Design how agents ask for clarification, explain uncertainty, handle failure and support safe actions.

Find opportunities nobody has asked for yet: Work closely with product, customer-facing teams and stakeholders. Identify friction, prototype quickly, validate ideas with users and ship the best solutions.

The problems are interesting

Imagine a business owner asking why their available funding has changed, exploring the underlying transactions and taking the next appropriate action - all through a natural conversation.

Or an operations colleague investigating a payment discrepancy, with an assistant that gathers relevant information, explains what happened and helps resolve the issue without jumping between multiple tools.

Or a relationship manager getting a clear, contextual picture of a customer before a conversation, without needing to understand the underlying data model.

How we work

We’re a small, focussed engineering team with autonomy, short feedback loops and direct access to the people using what we build. You’ll work closely with product and commercial stakeholders, and spend time understanding customers and internal teams.

We like quick prototypes, direct feedback and engineers who ship. We also build financial infrastructure, so reliability, security, explainability and responsible use of AI are essential.

About you

What we’re looking for

  • Strong software engineering background: Production software experience across backend services, APIs and ideally modern web applications.
  • Practical AI development experience: Hands-on experience with LLMs, tool calling, agents, MCP or related patterns; understanding of reliability, evaluation and context management.
  • Product instinct and user empathy: Ability to make complex technical or financial capabilities intuitive for non-technical users.
  • Fintech or financial product experience: Ideally experience in lending, banking, payments, financial data or customer-facing financial software.
  • Ownership and good judgement: Comfortable identifying problems, prototyping, shipping and deciding when deterministic workflows are preferable to agents.

You don’t need to know every framework. We care more about reliable software, user understanding and turning emerging AI capabilities into genuinely valuable products

You'd enjoy this role if...

  • You think great AI products should make complicated things feel effortless.
  • You enjoy agents and tools that do useful work, not just answer questions.
  • You naturally think about the person using the software.
  • You like moving between customer problems, product design, engineering and AI experimentation.
  • You want to shape a product, not just implement tickets.
  • You want tangible impact on how businesses access and manage finance.

Bring your curiosity. Build things that matter.
